The Story:

Diamond robbers are in town! Glenda Feathers hears the news over the radio on her way to deliver eggs to the Diamond Dog Diner. Her good friend, Lola, owner of the diner, must be warned! Why? Because Lola wears diamonds when she cooks-of course. "Your safe is the first place a robber would look, " Glenda tells Lola, and she outlines a scheme to hide the diamonds inside the eggs she has just delivered. Glenda's plan gets her into trouble, though, when the thieves, a short time later, happen into the diner for a cup of coffee. The madcap action never lets up as Glenda Feathers matches wits with the robbers. It's all a zany adventure in 'fowl' play.

Where did you get the idea?: This story was inspired by a diner just off I-91, in Whatley, Massachusetts. I thought it would make a great setting for a mystery story. Lola and her partner, Igor, are characters from another story I wrote, but never published. How did I think of Glenda Feathers? I have no idea.

Tidbits:

Glenda Feather's truck was inspired by my husband's old VW which he inherited from his father and then turned into a pick-up truck. Look at the title page of the book. Can you see where I dedicated the book to my husband, Ahren?

Diamonds in the eggs: I was pretty sure Glenda Feathers could hide the diamonds in the eggs; but I had to make sure. So I blew raw egg out of an eggshell and hid a thumbtack in the egg! If you want to try too, look for Glenda's directions in the book.

This book is a Reading Rainbow selection: Peter Falk reads the story. He gets Glenda Feather's voice just right! Be sure to watch the next time it is shown on PBS.

The illustrations:

  1. I drew the line with a soft, black pencil.
  2. The color is watercolor with a little crayon here and there.
