Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed

Publisher - Clarion Books
Ages 3-6

“Exuberant picture-book rendition of the popular nursery rhyme... Squiggling, swirling lines of color capture the sense of unbridled motion as the monkeys bounce, and one by one, topple from the bed... An amusingly presented counting exercise.”

star “. . . Christelow’s expressive monkeys pack a lot of appeal.”

The Story: Five little monkeys get ready for bed and say goodnight to Mama. As soon as they think she is gone, what do those monkeys do? They jump on the bed! Trouble lies ahead, though. One after another, the five little monkeys fall off and get hurt. Each time, Mama calls the doctor and each time, what does the doctor say? You guessed it! . . . "No more monkeys jumping on the bed!" How does Mama end this long and crazy night? Read the book and you'll find out!

Where did you get the idea?: Some people think I wrote the rhyme Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed. But it's an old finger play and jump rope rhyme that has been chanted by generations of children. I first heard it from my daughter, Heather, who learned it in first grade. At the time I thought, "That rhyme would make a wonderful picture book!" But I wasn't an author and illustrator of children's books then-although I was trying to be. Eight years later, when I was the author of five or six books, I remembered the monkey rhyme and decided to adapt it into a book. There are many rhymes and finger plays in the public domain that authors and illustrators adapt into picture books.

Tidbits:

Do you have any monkeys?
When Heather was three or four, she had a favorite stuffed monkey named Alice. I thought of Alice when I drew the five little monkeys.

The dedication: I dedicated this book to Heather and some of her special friends from preschool.

The illustrations:

  1. The line is pencil and ink
  2. The color is watercolor, watercolor pencil and watercolor crayon.
